Coup Attempt Quickly Foiled in Benin

An attempted coup in Benin was swiftly suppressed early today after a small group of soldiers seized the national television station.

The group, identifying as the Military Committee for Refoundation (CMR), appeared on state TV and declared the removal of President Patrice Talon, the dissolution of government institutions, and the suspension of the constitution. Lieutenant-Colonel Pascal Tigri was named the head of the new military authority.

Shortly afterward, reports confirmed the coup attempt had been defeated. The presidential office informed AFP that President Talon was safe and that the army was restoring order.

“This is a small group of people who only control the television,” his office stated. “The regular army is regaining control. The city and the country are completely secure.”

President Talon, who has been in power since 2016, is scheduled to leave office next April following presidential elections.
