Colombian President Petro Threatens Armed Response to Potential U.S. Attáck

Colombian President Gustavo Petro has vowed to “take up arms” in defense of his country if the United States launches an attack. This strong declaration comes in direct response to a warning from U.S. President Donald Trump, who hinted that Colombia could be America’s next target in anti-drug operations following the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro.

In a statement on social media, Petro, who had previously renounced violence, declared, “Know that you are facing a commander of the people.” He asserted that Colombian military forces have orders to protect him and confront any foreign invaders.

President Petro argued that his government is already combatting drug trafficking and warned that a U.S. attack would only empower cartels, risk civilian casualties, and could trigger a humanitarian crisis. He cautioned that his arrest could provoke a massive popular uprising in Colombia.

This tense exchange follows Trump’s warning for Petro to “watch his a–,” coupled with accusations that the Colombian leader is involved in cocaine trafficking to the United States. In response to the Venezuelan operation, President Petro has called for a United Nations Security Council hearing, condemning the U.S. military action.
