U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that approximately one in three Nigerian immigrant households in the United States relies on public welfare programs. This assertion was made in a post on his Truth Social platform, where he shared a chart titled “Immigrant Welfare Recipient Rates by Country of Origin.”
The chart, analyzing data from about 114 countries, places Nigeria near the middle with a reported rate of 33.3 percent. It lists immigrants from Bhutan and Yemen among the highest recipients of aid, while those from countries like Bermuda and Kenya are shown with the lowest rates.
This claim emerges amid ongoing Republican-led debates on immigration and public spending. It coincides with a series of heightened immigration restrictions under the Trump administration. In late 2025, the White House extended travel bans to include 39 countries, with Nigeria facing partial restrictions that limit access to various visa categories, including student and immigrant visas.
The administration has also tightened visa rules for Nigerians, reducing most non-immigrant visas to single-entry permits valid for only three months. These policies are part of a broader enforcement effort that reportedly led to the revocation of tens of thousands of visas in 2025.
