Acclaimed Nigerian musician and producer Cobhams Asuquo has voiced scepticism about the Grammy Awards, suggesting the institution leverages Nigerian talent for external economic gain.
In a widely circulated online clip, Asuquo stated, “I think Grammy is using Nigerians to boost the GDP of Los Angeles with all these nominations. It’s like a carrot dangling in front of us, and it goes away.”
He stressed the importance of developing indigenous platforms, noting, “I think we need to build something that is ours. It’s only America that will do the Super Bowl and be playing it themselves.”
Asuquo urged the music industry to re-evaluate its pursuit of international accolades. “Then one day we wake up to nominations, nominations. Let’s really think about this Grammy thing and create something in our own space,” he concluded.
