Christmas: Police Ban Sale, Use of Fireworks in Edo

The Edo State Police Command has prohibited the sale and use of fireworks during the festive season.

In a statement on Sunday, the command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Moses Yamu, declared that items such as “bangers” and “knockouts” are illegal and disruptive to public order.

He noted an increased use of fireworks across the state, which raises security concerns at a time of heightened police alertness.

“The loud and sudden explosions from these items are capable of creating unnecessary panic, causing fear in the minds of the public, and potentially leading to false security alerts or avoidable emergencies,” Yamu stated.

He emphasized that fireworks are already outlawed under existing regulations and warned that anyone found selling, purchasing, or using them will be arrested and prosecuted.

“Anyone found selling, purchasing, or using bangers will be arrested and made to face the full wrath of the law,” he added.

The police called on parents and guardians to monitor their children and advised traders not to stock the banned items. Surveillance will be intensified to ensure compliance.

Yamu reassured residents of the command’s commitment to maintaining safety throughout the season and encouraged the public to report violators via the police emergency lines.

These measures are part of broader efforts to maintain peace and prevent security breaches during the holidays.
