On Tuesday, President Bola Tinubu sent a request to the Senate seeking approval to deploy Nigerian soldiers for a peacekeeping mission in Benin Republic. In his communication, the President noted that the deployment is aimed at supporting the country at the request of President Patrice Talon, following a recent unsuccessful coup attempt.
This action aligns with the protocols of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and adheres to Section 30, Subsection 5 of Nigeria’s constitution.
The request has been forwarded to the committee of the whole for prompt review. Previously, Nigeria had conducted air interventions in response to the unconstitutional crisis in Benin.
