The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has announced a state of emergency for the entire region due to increasing political instability characterized by a series of coups and attempted military uprisings in recent months.
This declaration was made on Tuesday by ECOWAS Commission President Omar Touray during the 55th session of the Mediation and Security Council at the ministerial level, which took place in Abuja.
Touray stressed that this extraordinary measure was essential as the region confronts “unprecedented security and political threats,” highlighting the urgent need for collective action to preserve democracy and stability.
“The situation calls for a coordinated and prompt response. Our region is facing a troubling resurgence of coups and attempted mutinies that undermine our collective commitment to upholding constitutional order,” he stated during the high-level meeting.
The emergency declaration comes amidst rising fears over political unrest, military takeovers, and worsening security conditions in several West African nations.
ECOWAS ministers and security leaders gathered to review the situation and discuss strategies to enhance regional collaboration.
Touray reaffirmed ECOWAS’s dedication to restoring stability through diplomatic efforts, imposing sanctions when necessary, and bolstering regional security frameworks.
