Leaders of West African defense forces, operating within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), have reached an understanding regarding a potential military intervention in Niger if diplomatic negotiations fail.
Although the exact date for this intervention remains undisclosed, ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Abdel-Fatau Musah, referred to it as a possible “D-Day” following a two-day summit held in Ghana.
The focus of the summit was mainly on logistical and strategic considerations for a potential military operation in Niger, with an emphasis on the fact that such action would be a last resort.
The discussions centered on establishing a standby force to restore democracy in Niger, which has faced recent political upheaval due to a coup that resulted in the detention of President Mohamed Bazoum.
ECOWAS member countries, with the exception of those currently under military rule and Cape Verde, have expressed support for this standby force initiative.
Musah stated that the community was still seeking peaceful engagement with the junta, indicating that diplomatic efforts were ongoing.
The arrest of President Muhammed Bazoum by officers of the Presidential Guard on July 26 prompted ECOWAS to impose sanctions on the military personnel involved and issue a one-week ultimatum to restore Bazoum to power.
These sanctions included the suspension of financial transactions with Niger and the freezing of various service transactions, including energy-related ones.
