In a latest development, the military junta in Niger Republic has cut off all ties with Nigeria following the unsuccessful efforts of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to resolve the ongoing political impasse.
The development is coming despite issuing a seven-day ultimatum for the reinstatement of President Mohamed Bazoum.
It was learnt that ECOWAS’ attempts to avoid a possible clash with the junta were in vain.
President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria, in respond to the situation has sent a high-powered delegation led by General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd) to meet with the coup leaders on Thursday.
However, the delegation only managed to meet with representatives of the junta, failing to achieve a breakthrough.
As a result of these developments, Niger Republic has taken decisive action and severed diplomatic ties not only with Nigeria but also with Togo, France (its former colonizer), and the United States.
The country’s “extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassadors” to these nations have been terminated, according to statements made by one of the putschists on national television as reported by Radio France International.
The situation remains tense as regional and international communities closely monitor further developments in Niger. (CONTINUE READING HERE)
