The provision providing lifelong support to past elected governors and their deputies in Benue state was abolished by the State House of Assembly on Monday.
According to reports, the contentious pension measure extending benefits to former elected governors and their deputies from 1999 was enacted by the 9th Assembly in May 2023, just days before they were to leave office.
However, the bill that their predecessors had signed into law was overturned by the current 10th Assembly at plenary on Monday since it was not done so in good faith.
The parliamentarians unanimously voted to abolish the measure, citing its anti-people nature, following many submissions from House members.
Thus, the unanimous vote of the House to repeal the “Bill for a law to repeal provision for the maintenance of former elected governors of the state and their deputies and for other matters connected thereto 2024” was supported by Speaker of the House Aondona Dajoh.
Remember that the measure was first introduced on the floor by the then-chair of the House Committee on Business and Rules, Hon. Geoffrey Agbatse, and that it was later approved into law by the plenary headed by former Speaker of the 9th Assembly, Engr. Titus Uba. [CONTINUE READING HERE]
