Joshua Kimmich led Bayern Munich to the semi-finals at the Allianz Arena, ending Arsenal’s Champions League run.
The tie was in a precarious position before of the encounter at the Allianz Arena after a 2-2 draw in the first leg. While Bayern were upset over one refereeing call themselves, Arsenal believed they should have had a chance to take the lead into Bavaria when a late penalty request was rejected.
Barely a minute after the break, Bayern came dangerously close to taking the lead following a goalless first half as Leon Goretzka and Raphael Guerreiro struck the post in rapid succession. But just after the hour, they took the lead thanks to a header from Kimmich that soared into the area and past David Raya.
The hosts had opportunities to extend their lead, and Leroy Sana missed one just after the first goal. In an attempt to find an equalizer that would have sent the game into overtime, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta made substitutions, but it was not to be.
The opening shot of the match was missed by Harry Kane, who scored in the first leg from the penalty spot. David Raya was the goalie. It took the visitors twenty minutes to scare Manuel Neuer, as Gabriel Martinelli skillfully sidestepped a few tackles but was unable to find the back of the net.
With a last-ditch block by Ben White preventing Noussair Mazraoui from capping off a fast break and David Raya making a great save from Jamal Musiala’s speculative effort, Arsenal’s defense line had to be at its best. Conversely, Neuer found it difficult to save a Martin Odegaard attempt that came from the edge of the box.
After a misunderstanding with David Raya, Gabriel nearly scored an own goal for Arsenal, but Bayern reversed the tide early in the second half and came within inches of taking the lead. But the visitors could only withstand so many let-offs until Kimmich, having eluded his marker and left Raya with no chance, made the breakthrough.
Bayern advances to the semifinals, leaving Arsenal to concentrate on their pursuit of the Premier League championship. These are the talking points from Mirror Football after a challenging evening for the Gunners. [CONTINUE READING HERE]
