Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo has ordered the immediate closure of the Onitsha Main Market for one week. The shutdown, effective from Monday, January 26, 2026, is a direct response to traders’ refusal to open for business, defying the state government’s directive to ignore the outlawed “sit-at-home” order.
In a statement, the state government stated the drastic measure is necessary to enforce law and order, deter economic sabotage, and send a clear message that actions undermining government authority and disrupting commerce will not be tolerated.
Security agencies have been mobilized to ensure full compliance with the shutdown, and traders have been warned against any attempts to operate within the market during this period. The government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives, property, and the state’s economic stability, urging all residents and business owners to cooperate with lawful directives aimed at restoring and maintaining peace and normalcy.
