72-year-old Retired Soldier Takes His Own Life Over Hardship In Benue

Francis Dooga, a 72-year-old retired soldier, is said to have killed himself in Makurdi, the capital of Benue State.

The deceased is said to have hanged himself on Sunday, January 28, 2024, at approximately 6:00 p.m. at his residence located opposite St. Joseph Catholic Church in Iniongun, Makurdi.

A neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous, claimed that Dooga, also referred to as the “old soldier,” took the extreme measure while his family was not at home.

Some locals claimed that the deceased retiree had previously expressed complaints about difficulties.

“Before committing suicide, the man was always complaining of his Security Debartment Allowance (SDA) which was released by the Federal Government to the Defence Headquarters, which was in turn released to the military pension board,” a resident said.

“He said the pension was being released to them meagerly instead of in bulk monthly like their junior ones, resulting to abject poverty and abandonment by his family members.” [CONTINUE READING HERE]
