In response to recent allegations made by Atiku Abubakar, the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the presidency has firmly denied any involvement in undermining the judiciary and interfering with the presidential election results.
Dele Alake, special adviser on special duties, communications, and strategy to President Bola Tinubu, addressed the claims, stating that Abubakar was still grappling with the “shock of defeat” suffered in the last presidential election.
Abubakar’s media aide, Paul Ibe, had accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and agents of Tinubu of attempting to obstruct justice and create chaos if their desired outcomes were not met. The APC promptly dismissed these accusations as “arrant nonsense,” arguing that they were merely attempts to deflect attention from the PDP candidate’s possible defeat in the presidential electoral tribunal.
Alake contended that Abubakar’s claims lacked substantial evidence and were merely filled with innuendos, insinuations, and outright lies. He emphasized that if Abubakar truly believed in democracy and the sanctity of the judiciary, he should refrain from making unfounded allegations that could potentially undermine the important arm of government responsible for upholding the nation’s democracy.
The statement highlighted President Tinubu’s history as a champion of the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary. During his tenure as the governor of Lagos state between 1999 and 2007, Tinubu successfully challenged several decisions made by the PDP-led federal government that encroached on the rights of states as federating units.
The presidency reaffirmed that the presidential election held on February 25th, 2023, which led to Tinubu’s victory, was the most transparent election conducted in Nigeria since 1999. They maintained that there was no reason for the APC or President Tinubu to undermine the judiciary, as they had already presented a strong defense for the election results.
Calling on Atiku Abubakar to respect the sanctity of the judiciary, the presidency urged him to allow the legal process to take its course without resorting to harassment or self-help tactics. They labeled his actions as disingenuous and unbecoming of a former vice president, emphasizing the need for honorable conduct from political leaders.
As the presidential electoral tribunal’s proceedings continue, the nation awaits the impartial judgment based on points of law and evidence before the court, in what remains a crucial test of Nigeria’s democratic principles. (CONTINUE READING HERE)
