Former vice president and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of making attempts to compromise the judiciary. This accusation comes in the wake of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declaring Bola Tinubu, the candidate of the APC, as the winner of the presidential election.
According to INEC’s declaration, Bola Tinubu secured 8,794,726 votes, emerging as the winner of the election. Atiku Abubakar obtained the second-highest number of votes with 6,984,520, while Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) came in third with 6,101,533 votes.
Despite the outcome, both Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi are challenging Tinubu’s victory at the election tribunal, requesting the court to invalidate the election results. One of the grounds cited in their petition is Tinubu’s alleged failure to secure at least 25 percent of votes cast in the federal capital territory (FCT).
In response to the challenge, Tinubu’s counsel, Wole Olanipekun, argued that the FCT should be considered as the 37th state for electoral purposes, and any other interpretation would lead to chaos and alter the legislature’s intention.
Atiku Abubakar, through his media adviser, Paul Ibe, has accused the APC and agents of Bola Tinubu of attempting to intimidate the judiciary by making “catastrophic threats to anarchy if justice is not served according to their whims.” He called on the international community to take note of the situation.
In the statement, Atiku alleged that the APC has a history of intimidating the judiciary, referring to past instances where judges were accused of corruption, harassed, and suspended without any convictions resulting from the allegations. He cited the removal of the Chief Justice of Nigeria in 2019 as an example of such actions.
Atiku further claimed that the current plot is aimed at pressuring the judges involved in the election tribunal to deliver favorable judgments for the APC. He warned that this could lead to the theft of the mandate of over 200 million Nigerian citizens. (CONTINUE READING HERE)
