World Bank Approves $500m Loan To Drive Women’s Empowerment In Nigeria

The World Bank has granted approval for a $500 million loan requested by the Federal Government of Nigeria to bolster efforts in promoting women’s empowerment.

This funding is aimed at scaling up the financing for the Nigeria Women Programme (NWP), which initially received $100 million in financing on June 27, 2018.

In a statement released by the World Bank, it highlighted the significance of this loan in advancing the livelihoods of women in Nigeria. The additional financing through the NWP aims to create improved economic opportunities for women, addressing gender inequality and facilitating better education, health, and nutrition outcomes for families. Furthermore, it seeks to strengthen the resilience of women and communities to the challenges posed by climate change.

“The World Bank has approved $500 million for Nigeria for the Women Program Scale Up (NFWP-SU),” the statement read. This injection of funds will assist the Nigerian government in its commitment to uplifting women in society and fostering their active participation in various sectors.

It is worth noting that this marks the second loan approved by the World Bank during the tenure of the Tinubu administration, underscoring the commitment of the government to promoting gender equality and empowering women across the country.
