FG Introduce Proof Of Ownership Fee For All Vehicle Categories

In a bid to enhance vehicle registration and ownership documentation, the Federal Government of Nigeria has introduced a new policy requiring all categories of vehicles to obtain a Proof of Ownership Certificate (POC).

The announcement was made by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Engr AbdulHafiz Toriola, at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa, Lagos.

Starting from July, the POC will become a mandatory requirement for all vehicles in Lagos state. It will also need to be renewed annually as part of the vehicle registration process. Previously, Nigerians were only required to obtain a Proof of Ownership when purchasing a used vehicle or when changing the engine of their vehicle.

The implementation of the POC policy will affect all classes of vehicles, ranging from motorcycles and tricycles to mini vehicles, saloon cars, trucks, articulated vehicles, and other modes of transportation used for conveying people or products.

This new policy aims to improve the documentation and regulation of vehicle ownership across the country. It will help curb issues related to stolen vehicles, unregistered vehicles, and illegal transfers of ownership. By ensuring that all vehicles possess a valid Proof of Ownership Certificate, the government aims to promote accountability and enhance security in the transportation sector.

Vehicle owners and operators in Lagos state are advised to familiarize themselves with this new policy and ensure compliance by obtaining the necessary Proof of Ownership Certificate for their vehicles. Failure to comply with the new regulations may result in penalties or other legal consequences.
