A victim of domestic violence in Ezinifite, Aguata Local Government Area, Anambra State, has been rescued by the state government.
Mrs. Martha Umenweke, the victim’s madam, allegedly beat the 19-year-old Chidiebere Otenyi of Nkanu, Enugu state, to a pulp after accusing her of stealing N5,000.
Nevertheless, the victim refuted the charge, which led her madam to attack her.
Ify Obinabo, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, was notified of the unpleasant situation by an eyewitness, who then ordered the rescue.
Chidiebere, who was still in agony at the time of the rescue, claimed that during her year and a half of living with Martha, she endured harsh punishment for the smallest transgression, most notably starvation.
The 19-year-old was found to be in primary 3 after more interrogation, and she said that her employer had downgraded her in front of the class when she first arrived.
Mrs Martha Umenweke, a late-sixties woman, expressed her suspicion that Chidiebere had stolen her money, which is why she had beaten her ward.
During the rescue, it was also learned that Martha had an alibi in the form of Mr. David, who assisted in tying up Martha’s wrists and legs after she had battered the girl. [CONTINUE READING HERE
