Derek Chauvin, a former US police officer, got attacked in prison on Friday, as per New York Times sources. He’s the cop who got in trouble in 2021 for causing George Floyd’s death.
Freshreporters News recalls that Chauvin, who is a white man, knelt on Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes in a Minneapolis incident that caused big protests against racism.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed the attack at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Tucson in Arizona.
They didn’t say who got hurt, only that the injured person got taken to a local hospital.
Chauvin got sentenced to 22.5 years for second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter. People around the world protested a lot about this, and it made everyone talk about racism and policing.
In June 2023, the Department of Justice found serious problems in the Minneapolis police, like using deadly force when they shouldn’t and treating Black and Native American communities unfairly.
Minneapolis gave Floyd’s family $27 million to settle a wrongful death lawsuit. Chauvin tried to appeal to the US Supreme Court, but they said no. He’s not happy about it and called the trial and punishment a “sham” in a documentary.
