British Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has expressed support for the recent U.S. military intervention in Venezuela, stating that while the legal basis is unclear, the action was “morally justified.”
In media interviews, Badenoch admitted uncertainty about the legal framework of President Donald Trump’s decision to forcibly remove Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro but argued it was the “right thing to do.” She described Maduro’s government as a “brutal regime” and said she was glad he was gone.
Badenoch acknowledged that the operation raises serious questions about international law and the rules-based global order. The UK government has not formally criticized the U.S. action, merely reiterating its view that Maduro was an illegitimate leader. This stance contrasts with calls from opposition parties to condemn the intervention as illegal.
She explained that her views are influenced by her personal background, having grown up under military rule in Nigeria. However, she cautioned against establishing intervention as a general principle, stating that democratic nations should be treated differently and that such actions would be inappropriate for places like Greenland.
