The United States has paused visa processing for citizens of 75 countries, effective January 21. The indefinite suspension, first reported by Fox News, is part of a review of U.S. screening procedures ordered by the State Department.
The extensive list of affected nations includes Nigeria, Somalia, Russia, Iran, Afghanistan, Brazil, and Egypt, among others. An internal memo instructs consular officers to deny visas to applicants deemed likely to become a “public charge,” a decision based on factors like age, health, English proficiency, and financial resources.
This move aligns with the Trump administration’s broader push to tighten immigration controls, emphasizing national security and preventing the potential misuse of public welfare systems. While not a permanent ban, the suspension is expected to significantly disrupt travel for tourism, business, education, and family visits across multiple continents.
No timeline has been provided for when normal visa processing will resume, leaving prospective travelers and immigrants from the listed countries in a state of uncertainty pending the outcome of the policy review.
