The United States has denied and revoked visas for officials of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and the Palestinian Authority (PA), preventing them from attending the upcoming UN General Assembly in New York this September.
This unprecedented move is the first known instance of an entire foreign delegation being barred from the UNGA.
A key target of the restrictions is Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, whose attendance now faces serious uncertainty.
In contrast, the Palestinian UN mission will continue to operate, having been granted visa waivers under the UN Headquarters Agreement.
The visa bans stem from the State Department’s assessment that the PLO and PA failed to comply with U.S. legal commitments, including their response—or lack thereof—to the October 7 attacks, alleged incitement of terrorism, and efforts to secure unilateral recognition of Palestinian statehood.
Meanwhile, several Western nations are moving ahead with recognizing a Palestinian state amid this diplomatic showdown.
