Trump Warns of More U.S. Strikes in Nigeria Over Attàcks on Christians

U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that the United States may conduct further military strikes in Nigeria if attacks on Christians persist. This statement, made in an interview with The New York Times, comes despite Nigerian officials’ repeated insistence that there is no systematic religious persecution in the country.

President Trump’s warning follows a U.S. military strike in northwest Nigeria on Christmas Day, which the Nigerian government described as a joint counter-terrorism operation. Trump expressed hope that the strike would be a one-time action but stated that continued violence against Christians could lead to more U.S. military intervention. He previously characterized Christianity in Nigeria as facing an “existential threat.”

Nigeria, with a population of over 230 million roughly split between Christians and Muslims, has long grappled with insurgency and banditry, particularly in its northern regions. Nigerian authorities strongly reject the notion that Christians are being singled out, consistently arguing that extremist violence affects all communities and is driven by terrorism and criminality, not religion. While Nigeria remains open to cooperation with Washington in combating militants, it objects to framing the conflict as a religious war.
