A tiger at the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo has killed a senior zoo worker, Uriel Nuri, during a behind-the-scenes enrichment activity on Friday morning.
The 36-year-old, who led the zoo’s carnivore team, was attacked after the big cat escaped into an inner courtyard, despite all visitors being shielded safely behind glass.
The zoo, in cooperation with Israeli police, has launched a full investigation into how the tiger managed to breach its enclosure. Initial reports suggest the possibility of a loose cage door. The site has been temporarily closed to the public.
Nuri was rushed to Hadassah University Hospital-Ein Kerem with severe upper-body injuries. Despite extensive resuscitation efforts, he was pronounced dead.
“Our hearts go out to Uriel’s family,” the zoo stated. The tiger was tranquilized and later evacuated in critical condition.
