Thousands of supporters gathered at the Kano residence of former governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso on Sunday, demonstrating strong solidarity as the rift between him and current Governor Abba Yusuf deepens. The rally follows Governor Yusuf’s recent defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), which he blamed on internal party crises, with reports indicating he is aligning with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Kwankwaso’s camp has condemned the governor’s move as a betrayal of the voters’ mandate. The political fallout is accelerating, highlighted by the resignation of Kano State Commissioner for Science and Technology, Yusuf Ibrahim Kofarmata. In his resignation letter, Kofarmata stated he could no longer serve a government that had “derailed from the ideology that brought it to power” and reaffirmed his loyalty to Kwankwaso.
This has triggered further resignations among Kwankwaso’s allies in the administration, while Governor Yusuf has begun appointing replacements. Persistent rumors of Yusuf’s potential full defection to the APC are creating significant uncertainty in Kano’s political landscape as both factions maneuver ahead of future electoral battles.
