The Reason Parents Tell You to Wait Till You’re Older Before Marrying Is Pöverty — Peller Replies Critics

Nigerian TikToker Peller has responded to those criticising his decision to get married at a young age, arguing that age should not be the only factor considered when deciding when someone should marry.

Speaking during a recent TikTok live session, Peller said the reason many parents advise their children to wait until they are older before getting married is largely because of financial struggles.

“Let me tell you something for all of you saying he’s too young to get married. Let me tell you something, the reason your parents lie to you to get to a certain age before you get married, let me tell you the reason behind it it’s poverty. I swear to Almighty God.”

He argued that parents encourage their children to reach a particular age because they expect them to have started earning money and become financially stable by then.

“They keep telling you to get to a certain age because they know you’d have started making money,” Peller said.

The TikToker also questioned why people were more concerned about his age than other factors he believes are important in marriage.

“You all keep saying, how old are we? Are you counting the age or net worth or how much I love her?”

Peller further advised people who genuinely love someone to express those feelings rather than allowing age to determine their decision.

“If you love someone, show it to them.”

He also referenced older generations, claiming that some parents who married in their 30s and 40s did so because they were not financially capable of marrying earlier.

“Our parents that got married in their 30s and 40s, it’s because they didn’t have money then. That’s why. It’s poverty,” he added.
