Palpable tension and anxiety gripped the national secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the early hours of Monday morning as news circulated about the resignation and uncertain future of the embattled party’s National Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu.
Members of the secretariat staff arrived early at the party’s headquarters to verify the authenticity of the reports regarding Adamu’s resignation. Inside the complex, they gathered in groups, engrossed in discussions about the development.
Unlike previous occasions, a surprising number of 15 out of the 25-member National Working Committee (NWC) were present at the secretariat by 11 a.m. for the scheduled emergency NWC meeting, set to commence at 1 p.m. today.
Signs that Adamu’s resignation might have been confirmed became apparent around 10:45 a.m. when the party’s Deputy Chairman (North), Abubakar Kyari, arrived at the secretariat and deliberately occupied the parking lots reserved for the National Chairman at the entrance door. By 12 p.m., there was no indication that the embattled former Nasarawa State governor, Adamu, would be present for his usual daily activities or attend the NWC meeting.
Interestingly, there was minimal security presence both outside and inside the secretariat, with only the usual internal combined security details overseeing security at the premises.
The mood among the secretariat staff was mixed, with a few expressing sadness, while many others rejoiced at the news of the chairman’s departure. Some staff members who spoke to Daily Sun stated that the boldness of the Deputy Chairman occupying the chairman’s parking spot was confirmation enough of Adamu’s status within the party.
Contrary to the expectations of many secretariat staff, the National Secretary, Iyiola Omisore, made a triumphant entry into the secretariat at exactly 11:20 a.m. and headed straight to his office on the third floor.
Meanwhile, several national officers, including the zonal National Vice Chairmen, were engaged in a closed-door meeting. One secretariat staff member, speaking confidentially to our correspondent, expressed relief at Adamu’s departure, stating, “It is good that he is gone. He has inflicted pain and misery on several staff since he assumed office here. We have prayed for a day like this, and thank God our prayers have been answered today. Let him go because we are tired of him.”
