Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto, has announced that June 28 will be celebrated as Eid al-Adha this year. This important religious festival, also known as Sallah, is characterized by the sacrificial slaughtering of a ram, symbolizing the “festival of sacrifice.”
Eid al-Adha holds deep significance in Islam as it commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son, Isma’il (Ishmael), as an act of obedience and devotion to God. This act of faith is considered a testament to Ibrahim’s unwavering commitment to his Creator.
Among the Islamic community, Eid al-Adha is the second major religious festival, following Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan. It is a time of joyous celebration, unity, and gratitude, as Muslims come together to partake in special prayers, exchange gifts, and share meals with family and friends.
The national moonsighting committee issued a statement on Sunday evening, declaring the date of Eid al-Adha based on the sighting of the new moon. In the statement, the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, conveyed his advance wishes of a happy Eid al-Adha to all Muslims.
“The Sultanate Council Sokoto has declared Monday, June 19, 2023, as the first day of Zul-Hijjah 1444 AH. Accordingly, Wednesday, June 28, 2023, will be the day of Eid al-Adha 1444 AH,” the statement proclaimed.
His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa‘ad Abubakar, CFR, mni, extended his heartfelt greetings to the entire Muslim Ummah, wishing them a joyous and blessed Eidul Adha in advance.
