Sokoto State to Strictly Enforce Law Against Expensive Pre-Wedding Activities

The Sokoto State Government has announced it will begin strict enforcement of an existing law that bans extravagant pre-wedding activities. Governor Ahmed Aliyu stated that the high costs associated with marriage ceremonies are discouraging young people from getting married and leading to negative social consequences.

In a statement, Governor Aliyu blamed the culture of “lavish pre-wedding spending” for placing a heavy financial burden on couples and contributing to a rising number of unmarried youths. He argued that some young people are being pushed into “immoral behaviour” because they cannot afford the high costs traditionally linked to weddings.

The Governor emphasized that despite the law being in place, it is still being violated by parents and guardians who organize expensive, showy events. He announced that the state will soon engage with stakeholders to review and fully implement the law. Aliyu stressed that this government intervention is necessary to protect young people and make marriage more accessible and affordable, aligning with Islamic principles.

He called on parents, Islamic scholars, and traditional rulers to support the enforcement drive. The Governor made these remarks during the commissioning of a remodeled mosque and Islamic school in Sokoto, where religious leaders also praised his administration’s efforts in developing Islamic institutions.
