NDLEA Arrests Brazilian Woman at Abuja Airport with Heröin Worth Over N3 Billion

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a 30-year-old Brazilian woman, Ingrid Rosa Benevides, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja for allegedly attempting to smuggle heroin into the country. The seized drugs have an estimated street value exceeding N3 billion.

According to the NDLEA, the arrest on Friday, January 23, followed intelligence-led operations. Benevides arrived in Abuja on a Qatar Airways flight from Brazil. During a search of her two checked-in bags, officers discovered 21 factory-sealed packs labeled as Brazilian coffee.

Further inspection revealed the packages did not contain coffee but held a white substance, later confirmed to be heroin. The total weight of the seized drugs was 30.09 kilograms.

In a preliminary statement, the suspect, who reportedly works as a private security officer in Brazil, claimed she had come to Nigeria for a holiday and was unaware of the concealed narcotics in her luggage. The NDLEA has not yet commented on this claim, and the investigation is ongoing.
