Panic has gripped the farming community of Tidibale in Sokoto State’s Isa Local Government Area following a fresh threat allegedly issued by notorious bandit leader Bello Turji. This warning, coming after months of relative calm, has sent families fleeing their homes and farms, renewing deep-seated fears in the region.
Residents report that the threat has triggered a mass exodus, with many seeking refuge in Isa town, Gidan Hamisu, and neighboring areas of Zamfara State. Women, children, and the elderly are reportedly the most affected. The warning is seen as an attempt by Turji to reassert his influence after a period of reduced activity, reportedly targeting communities that have not aligned with his group and warning of “dire consequences.”
The timing is disastrous for farmers preparing for the new planting season, many of whom are now displaced and sheltering with relatives. In contrast, some communities in neighboring Zamfara State, including Shinkafi, have reportedly entered non-aggression pacts with Turji’s faction, agreeing not to confront or report their activities as a survival strategy.
Security analyst Altine Guyawa notes the development has reshaped the local “geography of fear,” concentrating Turji’s influence in specific Sokoto local government areas. He warns that civilians often bear the brunt after such periods of quiet. Efforts to obtain a comment from the Sokoto State Police Command were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
