Six Suspects Arrested For Armed Robbery In Osogbo, Osun State

The Osun State Police Command has apprehended six individuals in connection with an armed robbery incident that occurred in Osogbo. According to the spokesperson of the command, Yemisi Opalola, four of the suspects allegedly snatched a Mercedes Benz car from a driver at gunpoint.

Opalola stated that Ibrahim Yusuf (24), Lawal Abubakar (25), Umar Abubakar (35), and Sule Muhammed (20) were arrested on June 15 following a complaint lodged at the Gbongan Police Division. The remaining two suspects, Salisu Ismail (31) and Habeeb Saidu (27), who were identified as the receivers of the stolen vehicle, were apprehended in Lagos State.

Providing details of the incident, Opalola explained, “On 15th June 2023 at about 0630hrs, the complainant reported at Gbongan Division that, at about 0100hrs of the same date, he picked four passengers from Opic park, Ogun State, heading to Abuja with an unregistered Mercedes Benz car. But on reaching a point around Ikire’s jurisdiction, the said passengers forced him to stop and started shooting to scare him. While struggling with them, he was stabbed with a knife on his left hand, pushed out of the vehicle, and the suspects fled with the 4matic Benz car. He further stressed that he can identify the suspects if seen.”

Upon receiving the report, the police promptly deployed a team of officers for a stop and search operation along the Ibadan/Ile-Ife expressway in Gbongan. However, upon spotting the police, the suspects abandoned the stolen vehicle and fled into the bush. Undeterred, the police conducted a thorough search of the area, leading to the arrest of two of the suspects. Additionally, the Anti-Kidnapping Squad’s efforts in Lagos State led to the arrest of four other suspects.

In a separate operation, the police also apprehended three individuals—Akano Olasunkanmi (20), Monsuru Ali (25), and Tunde Alabi (42)—for alleged unlawful possession of firearms. The operatives recovered a cut-to-size locally-made pistol, 10 locally-made Dane guns, one pump-action shotgun, and one live cartridge from the suspects.

The Osun State Police Command continues its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of residents, as well as the swift apprehension of criminals. The arrested suspects will be charged accordingly, and investigations into their activities will be carried out to ascertain any further involvement in criminal activities.
