Singer Tems Laments Lack of Respect for Women in Nigerian Music Industry

Nigerian Grammy-winning singer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has spoken out against gender bias in the Nigerian music scene, revealing that she struggled to be taken seriously early in her career due to being a woman.

In a recent BBC interview, the Love Me Jeje crooner said she hopes to “change the way women see themselves in music” through her new platform, The Leading Vibe Initiative.

The project aims to give female artists better access to opportunities, wider audiences, and sustainable success.

Tems also urged upcoming female musicians to clearly define their goals, brand identity, and personal boundaries, stressing the importance of knowing “what you wouldn’t do for fame and what you would.”

Other Nigerian stars, including Tiwa Savage and Yemi Alade, have also voiced concerns over gender-based challenges in the industry.
