Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has sparked a fierce online debate with a blunt response to critics who question his relevance. In a viral clip, he highlighted the lasting power of his father Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s legacy by revealing he recently received a $120,000 inheritance—nearly three decades after Fela’s death.
“How many of una father fit send una money from the grave 29 years later?” Kuti challenged, using the moment to distinguish between what he called “true accomplishment” and mere wealth. He argued that many of his detractors fail to understand the significance of being “the child of somebody who accomplished something.”
Kuti insisted his point was not about money but about enduring moral and cultural influence, claiming that such a legacy outlives material possessions. His comments have polarized social media: supporters praise his unapologetic defense of his father’s impact, while critics accuse him of arrogance and disrespect. The heated discussion continues to fuel debates over legacy, privilege, and the nature of true achievement in Nigeria.
