Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has publicly condemned the fanbase of superstar Wizkid, known as “Wizkid FC,” for what he describes as ignorant and disrespectful behavior. In a lengthy Instagram video, Kuti’s main grievance centered on the fans repeatedly invoking the name of his late father, music legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, in online debates.
“Keep Fela’s name out of your (Wizkid FC) mouths,” Kuti demanded. He accused the fans of initially trying to “steal” Fela’s legacy by labeling their favorite artist as the “new Fela,” only to turn against the comparison when it failed to hold up. “Your lack of respect comes from a place of ignorance. Complete ignorance,” he stated.
Kuti also criticized the broader culture of “toxic” online fan rivalry, urging listeners to appreciate music without constant and aggressive comparisons. He argued that truly impactful art should inspire thoughtful reflection, not fuel social media battles.
Recalling previous confrontations, Seun Kuti vowed he would never retreat when defending his father’s legacy, which he said is open to respect but not up for debate. He concluded by insisting Fela’s name should be removed from contemporary fan wars, noting that his family continues to support the wider music industry through events like the annual Felabration festival.
