Salako Treasure, a 100-level student of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, was found dead in an uncompleted building in the Lagere area. The young student is suspected to have taken her own life by consuming a substance believed to be sniper, a poisonous insecticide.
Salako Treasure, a student in the Department of Entrepreneurship, was discovered lifeless on Wednesday evening, with a bottle of sniper found beside her body. It has come to light that the deceased had been facing emotional trauma, known to some of her friends and acquaintances, prior to the tragic incident.
Expressing their condolences, the Public Relations Officer of the University, Abiodun Olarewaju, described the loss as unfortunate and deeply saddening. He emphasized that although the incident occurred outside the campus, the university was deeply affected by the loss of such a promising young lady. Olarewaju urged Nigerians to be vigilant and supportive of one another, urging people to seek help and offer assistance to those struggling with mental health issues.
“It is very unfortunate that we have lost a first-year student, a promising young lady, to what is alleged to be suicide,” stated Olarewaju. “The university, under the administration of Vice-Chancellor Professor Simeon Bamire, is pained that a student of such tender age could resort to such extreme measures. We appeal to Nigerians to be their brothers’ keepers. We sympathize with ourselves, especially the parents who have lost a young lady with a bright future. I want to admonish that this world is filled with ups and downs. Emotional, psychological, and academic frustrations should not lead anyone to contemplate taking their own life. Her remains have been evacuated, and we have involved the police in the investigation.”
The Osun Police Command has confirmed the incident and stated that the body of Salako Treasure has been evacuated and deposited at the University Teaching Hospital. The police spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola, disclosed that investigations into the circumstances surrounding her death are currently underway.
