Road Accident Claims Lives Of Family Of 4, Ten Others At Military Checkpoint In Enugu (Video)

Enugu State was plunged into mourning on Tuesday as a devastating accident at a military checkpoint claimed the lives of several individuals, including a family of four.

The heart-wrenching incident occurred at Ugwu Onyeama along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway around 9 am, sending shockwaves through the community.

Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that the accident involved multiple vehicles and resulted in the immediate loss of five lives, while numerous others sustained varying degrees of injuries. The family, tragically unidentified at this time, consisted of a man, his wife, and two children. Only one of the children survived the harrowing ordeal.

In the wake of the incident, Deputy Governor of Enugu State, Barr. Ifeanyi Ossai, arrived at the scene to conduct an on-the-spot assessment and visited the hospitals where the injured victims were being treated. Ossai expressed his deep sorrow over the losses incurred and extended his gratitude to the medical facilities for their prompt response in providing care to the injured.

He also acknowledged the efforts of the first responders, including military personnel, the Road Safety Corps, fire service, Department of State Services (DSS), and the police, for their swift action in minimizing the number of casualties.

“We visited the private clinic at 9th mile where a substantial number of our citizens are hospitalized, and we are also here at the orthopedic hospital where some of the victims are receiving treatment,” stated the Deputy Governor. “We’re grateful to the doctors for their prompt interventions because, without their efforts, we would have experienced even greater losses. We’re also appreciative of the first responders and all the institutions that swiftly arrived to provide immediate assistance and prevent further tragedy.”

Furthermore, the Deputy Governor assured the injured individuals and their families that the government would extend its support to cover their medical expenses.

He emphasized that the incident underscored the urgent need to reinforce the institutions responsible for ensuring accident-free roads. Ossai stressed that some accidents are preventable and urged for increased focus on regular vehicle maintenance and training programs for drivers.
