The Rivers State Police Command has arrested a 26-year-old man, Goodnews Iberi, in connection with the kidnapping and murder of a 25-year-old woman, Rita Eleonu. The suspect, from the Rumuakunde community in Emohua LGA, was apprehended following an investigation into the victim’s disappearance.
According to police spokesperson SP Grace Iringe-Koko, Iberi and his accomplices allegedly lured Eleonu, who was from the Rumuekini community, to a forest along the Emohua axis of the East-West Road.
After the kidnapping, the gang reportedly contacted the victim’s family and demanded a ransom. The family paid ₦210,000 in an attempt to secure her release.
Unbeknownst to the family, the suspects had already murdered Eleonu and buried her in a shallow grave at the crime scene. Iberi was arrested at his hideout in the early hours of January 8, 2026. The police state that during interrogation, he confessed to the crime and led officers to the location where the victim’s remains were recovered.
