Riots Erupt In Paris After French-Algerian Boy, Nael M, Was Shot Dêad By Police While Driving (Video)

Paris was engulfed in chaos and violence as riots erupted on the streets after a French-Algerian teenager was shot dead by a police officer during a traffic stop. The incident occurred in the western suburb of Nanterre, when Nael M., a 17-year-old delivery driver, was fatally gunned down while behind the wheel of a Mercedes. The shocking killing, captured on video and widely shared on social media, has sparked outrage and intensified tensions between the police and the public.

Eyewitnesses described the shooting as “an execution,” as the video footage clearly shows an armed traffic officer pointing his service pistol at the yellow hired Mercedes AMG and threatening the young driver, saying, “I’m going to lodge a bullet in your head.” A gunshot is heard, and the vehicle jerks forward before coming to a halt, leaving Nael dead at the scene. The incident occurred at approximately 8:30 am, near the Nanterre-Prefecture RER train station, close to the Nelson-Mandela Square and La Défense business district.

Initially, the police claimed that they opened fire because the driver had rammed them with his car. However, their narrative quickly unraveled when the video footage surfaced, contradicting their version of events. The incident has further strained public trust in law enforcement and reignited the debate over police conduct and accountability.

In response to the shooting, enraged youths took to the streets, setting fire to bins and launching fireworks at the police. The unrest escalated as night fell, with cars and buildings set ablaze and violence spreading to other suburbs throughout the city. By Wednesday morning, authorities had made 24 arrests in connection with the riots.

The police officer responsible for the fatal shooting is currently in custody, as the investigation into the incident unfolds. Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin has appealed for calm and urged the public to respect both the grieving family and the presumption of innocence of the police. However, tensions remain high, with local residents staging protests outside the police headquarters and clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement continuing into the night.

The tragic death of Nael M. has once again brought issues of police violence and accountability to the forefront in France. Prosecutors have initiated a murder investigation against the unnamed officer involved, while questions persist regarding the initial claims made by the police officers at the scene. As Paris grapples with the aftermath of this devastating incident, the city and its citizens face the challenge of rebuilding trust and finding a path toward justice and reconciliation.
