The Lagos king, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, has told Igbos to work with the state’s leaders and show some respect to the “land’s owners.”
Akiolu waved away the insinuations that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu would purposely destroy their property, saying cooperation is key.
He made these comments on Saturday during a meeting with the president of Ohanaeze, Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, at his palace.
Freshreporters News reports that some Igbos in Lagos had been worried about the state government tearing down their homes and shops, accusing Sanwo-Olu’s government of unfairly targeting them based on their ethnicity.
However, Akiolu stated: “We know Igbos work very hard, but you must respect those who own the land. We’ve seen the problem in Nigeria, and we want to fix it.
“I beg you, for God’s sake. The governor won’t destroy your property on purpose. Just follow the rules.
“To the Igbos, anyone who wants what’s best for Lagos is a Lagosian.
“I promise Ndigbo that no one will mistreat you unfairly. All of you should work with the Lagos government to make the state better.”
