Portuguese Star, Cristiano Ronaldo Sets Another World Record

In a remarkable achievement, Cristiano Ronaldo has reclaimed the title of the world’s highest-paid athlete according to Forbes’ annual list. This marks the third time Ronaldo has achieved this feat, with the previous occurrence being in 2017.

His outstanding earnings in 2023 have also earned him a Guinness World Records title for the highest annual earnings for an athlete.

For the period of May 2022 to May 2023, Ronaldo’s estimated earnings reached a staggering $136 million (£107.5 million). This significant sum catapulted him to the top of the list, surpassing his rival Lionel Messi, who held the title in the previous year with earnings of $130 million (£103 million).

Ronaldo’s earnings consisted of $46 million (£35 million) from his performances on the field, while an impressive $90 million (£68.5 million) was generated from his off-field ventures. The Portuguese superstar’s departure from Manchester United in January 2023 to join Saudi Arabian team Al-Nassr brought him a lucrative contract that nearly doubled his salary, contributing to his record-breaking income.

While Ronaldo’s on-field earnings are substantial, his off-field earnings far outweigh them. Alongside his lifetime endorsement deal with Nike, the football icon generates substantial revenue through his CR7-branded merchandise, cementing his status as a global brand.

Forbes compiles their rankings by gathering data from industry insiders, news reports, and salary databases. On-field earnings include salaries, prize money, and bonuses, while off-field earnings encompass sponsorship deals, appearance fees, memorabilia and licensing income, and returns from any businesses in which the athlete holds a significant interest.

Joining Ronaldo in the top three highest-paid athletes of the 2022-23 period are two fellow football stars. Lionel Messi secured the second spot with total earnings of $130 million, evenly split between on-field and off-field earnings. Meanwhile, Kylian Mbappé’s on-field earnings of $100 million contributed significantly to his overall earnings of $120 million.

Other notable athletes on the list include LeBron James, who set a record for the highest annual earnings for a basketball player in 2023, amassing $119 million ($44.5 million from on-court earnings and $75 million from off-court ventures). Boxer Canelo Alvarez also achieved a record for the highest annual earnings in his sport, accumulating $110 million ($100 million from in-ring earnings and $10 million from outside endeavors).

In tennis, retired legends Roger Federer and Serena Williams dominated the earnings for their respective genders in 2023. Federer secured ninth place overall with a total of $95.1 million, primarily derived from off-court earnings. Serena, on the other hand, ranked 49th but still amassed a substantial $45.3 million, with the majority coming from off-court earnings as well.
