A sense of shock and grief enveloped the quiet neighborhood of Mathis Street yesterday evening, as authorities responded to a horrific incident involving a murder-suicide.
The devastating event took place at approximately 11:19 p.m., leaving a man and a woman dead, and another woman wounded. The incident occurred at a residence located at 825 Mathis St.
According to the preliminary investigation led by Rockport Police Chief Greg Stevens, the primary suspect in the case has been identified as Richard Becker, a 57-year-old resident of the home.
Tragically, Becker fatally shot his girlfriend, Sharon Simmons, 59, in the kitchen of the residence. The motive behind the heinous act remains unknown at this time.
The violent spree did not stop there. After shooting Simmons, Becker turned his weapon towards Loretta Jones, a close friend of Simmons and 63 years old.
Jones sustained injuries but managed to escape the clutches of the assailant. The brave survivor was able to flee to safety, raising the alarm and contacting the authorities for help.
With Jones in safety, law enforcement swiftly arrived at the scene. As they proceeded to secure the premises, Becker retreated into a back bedroom.
Despite efforts to negotiate and persuade Becker to surrender peacefully, the situation took a tragic turn. Authorities discovered the lifeless body of Richard Becker in the bedroom, having succumbed to an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
