Kidnapping is becoming a significant security challenge in Nigeria, with various reports indicating that the rate of abductions is on the rise. However, there is good news to report, as the Police Command in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in collaboration with local security outfits recently rescued 58 kidnap victims from some identified kidnappers’ dens in communities contiguous to the territory.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer in the FCT, SP Josephine Adeh, the victims were rescued at Udulu Forest, Gegu LGA of Kogi State, bordering Sardauna Forest, Nasarawa State, and other identified kidnappers’ den in communities contiguous to the FCT.
The rescue operation was part of efforts by the command’s leadership to sustain joint operations with other security agencies, vigilantes, and hunters from the various local communities.
The rescue operation was not without its challenges, as the bandits/kidnappers engaged the security team in a shootout. However, the security team coordinated by the police was able to overpower the bandits, who escaped with various degrees of bullet injuries, leaving behind their victims.
Sadly, one of the kidnap victims, Tama Jonathan, sustained an injury during the rescue operation and died on the spot. The remains of the victim were subsequently released to his family for burial. However, the other 58 rescued victims are being stabilized in the hospital and would be reunited with their families.
The success of this rescue operation is a testament to the efforts of the Police Command in the FCT, who are committed to preventing threats to the safety and security of FCT residents. The PPRO, Josephine Adeh, pledged the command’s commitment to sustaining efforts to prevent threats to safety and security and rescue any resident held hostage by criminals while bringing the perpetrators to book.
The Commissioner of Police (CP) in charge of the FCT, Mr. Haruna Garba, has called for cooperation from FCT residents, urging them to be security conscious and provide credible information to the Police. The CP recognizes that the fight against crime requires a collective effort, and residents must play their part in ensuring a safer and more secure FCT.
In conclusion, the successful rescue of 58 kidnap victims is a significant achievement for the Police Command in the FCT and local security outfits. It is a testament to the commitment and dedication of the security forces in combating violent crimes in the FCT. However, there is still much work to be done, and residents must be vigilant and cooperate with the Police to ensure a safer and more secure FCT.
