Police Arrest Social Media User Over Alleged Hate Speech Against The Igbo People

The Osun Police Command has taken into custody a 28-year-old man identified as Kehinde Adesogba Adekusibe, following allegations of violating the social media policy on hate speech. The arrest comes after an offensive tweet was posted from Adekusibe’s Twitter account, sparking outrage within the online community.

In a statement released on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Olamuyiwa Adejobi, it was revealed that on the 18th of May 2023, the suspect, Kehinde Adekusibe, published a tweet containing incendiary language targeting the Igbo ethnic group. The tweet read, “Let’s kill all the Igbos. Let’s flush them out of Yoruba lands. I hate these people with passion. They are violent people. They are the worst. They hate us. Let’s hate them without holding back.”

Following public outcry and the severity of the hate speech, law enforcement authorities swiftly launched an investigation. Police detectives from the Cybercrime Section at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Osogbo diligently probed the case, eventually locating and apprehending the suspect in Ilesa.

According to the statement, Kehinde Adekusibe has admitted to the crime during questioning. The police will continue their investigation, and upon its completion, he will be charged to court. The statement concluded with a reassurance of the police’s commitment to upholding the law and ensuring the safety and security of all citizens.
