A suspected improvised explosive device (IED) detonated at the Bayelsa State Secretariat Complex in Yenagoa in the early hours of Wednesday, February 11, 2026, triggering an immediate security response. Authorities have since arrested 60-year-old Pentecost Elijah, a native of Otuan Community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, in connection with the blast.
In a statement, Commissioner of Police CP Iyamah confirmed the incident, saying, “The Bayelsa State Police Command wishes to inform the public of a suspected IED explosion which occurred today, 11th February 2026, at about 0600hrs within the State Secretariat Complex.”
The Commissioner added, “The suspect is currently undergoing interrogation at the State Criminal Investigation Department, and upon conclusion, the suspect will be charged in court.”
Preliminary investigations suggest Elijah carried out the act to protest what he claimed was neglect regarding his medical condition, aiming to draw attention to his plight. Authorities have assured the public that the situation is under control and normal activities have since resumed at the complex.
