The Niger State House of Assembly Speaker, Abdulmalik Sarkindaji, has withdrawn his support for the 100 orphans who are scheduled to get married in a mass wedding in his district. Instead, he has asked Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, the Minister of Women Affairs, to look into allegations of abuse of children’s rights.
This was stated by Sarkindaji to reporters at a briefing inside the Minna House of Assembly premises.
He voiced his disapproval of the minister’s stance on the mass marriage and his assistance to orphans whose parents are unable to pay for the costs of marriage.
The Speaker, who was clearly irritated by the bad media reports that were being linked to the minister, claimed that although conclusions were made about the situation, he was never asked for clarification.
