Pastor Kingsley Okonkwo has ignited a fresh wave of debate online after asserting that tattoos have divine sanction, pointing to a biblical verse as evidence.
During a live broadcast, the pastor referenced Isaiah 49:16, interpreting the passage that speaks of God having “engraved” His people on the palms of His hands as a metaphorical tattoo. “God himself has tattooed you. Christ himself has tattooed you,” he stated, arguing this shows tattoos are not inherently forbidden for Christians.
He challenged common objections based on the Book of Leviticus, calling them a misapplication of scripture. Pastor Okonkwo stressed his confidence in this interpretation, noting his extensive experience and age within the Christian faith.
He further cited the Book of Revelation, suggesting it indicates Jesus bears inscriptions, and encouraged believers not to hide their convictions due to societal pressure.
These remarks have provoked a divided response on social media, with some Christians aligning with his view and others strongly opposing it. The comments have rekindled longstanding theological discussions about body art and doctrine within Christian circles.
