Clark Warns Tinubu Against Scrapping Niger Delta Amnesty
The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has cautioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu against the potential elimination of the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs.
The warning was conveyed in a statement signed by PANDEF’s National Leader, Chief Edwin Clark, and National Chairman, Senator Emmanuel Ibok Essien, following their meeting in Abuja on Friday.
The forum emphasized the importance of the ministry, which was established by late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and continued by subsequent administrations under Presidents Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari.
They stressed that the ministry’s role in infrastructure development, environmental preservation, and youth empowerment in the oil-rich Niger Delta region is vital.
PANDEF urged President Tinubu to appoint a minister for Niger Delta Affairs, cautioning that any attempt to scrap the ministry could lead to negative repercussions.
The forum’s statement underlined the significance of preserving institutions like the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs and others that contribute to peace and progress in the region.
Former Senate Chief Whip, Orji Uzor Kalu, had suggested the abolition of the Niger Delta Ministry, citing redundancy due to the presence of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
