Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has reaffirmed the state’s historical claim to the popular Yoruba fabric, Adire, during a courtesy visit by the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila.
In a video that has since gone viral, the governor presented a gift bag containing Adire materials to Gbajabiamila while asserting that Osun remains the cultural home of the indigenous textile.
Adeleke said:
“This is Adire. Osun State is the source.
“In fact, I registered it in Ede, then Osogbo.”
Sounding surprised, Gbajabiamila replied, “I thought it was Ogun State.”
The Osun governor quickly responded: “No, no, no. They stole it from us. They came to Ede, my town. You know Ede is just 15 minutes drive from Osogbo.”
Jokingly, Gbajabiamila questioned, “Dapo Abiodun did that?”
“Yes!, but since Abeokuta is a Yoruba land, I don’t mind. I just want you to recognise and give us credit that Osogbo is the source.
“This Adire, I want you to sew it. We wear it every Wednesday just to celebrate Adire Day. We call it Adire Day.”
Gbajabiamila asked, “I can wash it before I wear it?”
Adeleke assured, “You can wash it.”
Gbajabiamila, with a playful tone, quipped in Yoruba, “Ko ma lo di bí ti PDP,” meaning “Let it not turn out like the PDP’s version,” sparking laughter among those present. [CONTINUE READING HERE]>>>>>
