Tragedy struck a Giant Eagle supermarket in North Olmsted, Ohio, as a man entered the store and fatally shot his ex-wife before turning the gun on himself. The incident, which occurred on Sunday morning, left both individuals dead.
The victims were identified as Susan Peterson, 63, and Bernard Edward Smith, 60. Although they were once married, they had divorced in 2004. North Olmsted Mayor Nicole Dailey Jones confirmed that the authorities were treating the case as a murder-suicide.
North Olmsted, a city located just southwest of Cleveland with a population of approximately 30,000 residents, was shaken by the incident. Mayor Dailey Jones expressed her condolences and emphasized the significance of Giant Eagle within the local community. The popular grocery store had been a longstanding pillar in North Olmsted, serving the needs of its residents for many years.
The shooting took place at the Giant Eagle supermarket on the 27000 block of Lorain Avenue around 9:30 a.m. on Sunday. Responding to a distress call, the North Olmsted Police arrived at the scene within a minute to find both victims on the supermarket floor. Chief Bob Wagner of the North Olmsted Police Department stated during a press conference that there were approximately 200 shoppers in the store at the time of the incident.
Susan Peterson had been employed at the Giant Eagle for nearly four years, joining the ranks of over 60 other employees who were present during the tragic event. The local community mourns the loss of these lives and stands united in support of those affected by this heartbreaking incident.
